We endeavour to treat each patient as if they were our only patient. To provide every patient with excellent care and the best service we possibly can - ensuring that we have at our disposal every idea, technique or method in order to achieve this end.
Foot
Lower leg, ankle and foot conditions. including: Achille's tendonitis, other foot conditions. These injuries we very effectively treat with physiotherapy and specialized rehabilitation. A biomechanical assessment is part of the treatment, to eliminate any intrinsic cause for the injury. The services of a podiatrist may be called upon and we could recommend experts in the field, for their opinion should it be necessary.

Foot Injuries: Two of the most common foot injuries are Morton's neuroma, and plantarfasciitis.

  1. Morton's Neuroma: This is an entrapment of the nerve which supplies the area between two of the toes usually the 3rd and 4th toes. It results in nerve pain that radiates into the toes from the top of the foot. At first the pain occurs only with weighjt bearing, but with time it will occur at rest as well. Sometimes it may cause numbness of two of the toes. This symptom should be differentially diagnosed from a nerve entrapment in the spine. Pain is relieved by removal of the shoes.

Management: An orthotic will raise and support the metatarsal arch. Suitable shoes will help, which provide sufficient space for the toes. Reduction of activity will help. Cortisone injection, if physiotherapy with acupuncture does not help. If both of these treatments fail, surgical excision is indicated.

  2. Plantarfasciitis: The plantar fascia, functions as a shock absorber in the foot, and it helps to provide stability. It will result in pain on the under surface of the heel. This will be especially bad on rising in the morning, easing within 5 minutes of moving around.

Management: High arched feet, are given flexible orthotics, and soft shoes. Flat feet are given flexible orthotics and anti pronation shoes (slight). Training is slowed and gradually increased. Physiotherapy, anti inflammatories, and acupuncture are usually effective, but if these fail a steroid injection will usually help. No more than three should be tried.
