Acupuncture
Acupuncture can be used to promote healing by normalizing the flow of energy in the body and tissues. It does this by providing energy, as the needles have an electromagnetic field around them, which causes charge movement and therefore energy flow. In addition, the needles cause "bleeding" and therefore increased blood flow into the tissues, and cause the release of custom made anti-inflamatories (released by the brain) to flow into the damaged tissues. It is a remarkably effective mode of treatment. Our physios are trained in acupuncture and dry needling, which adds another dimension to the holistic treatment our patients obtain in the practice.

Alleviation of respiratory and sinus conditions
Physiotherapy can be used to enhance aeration of the lungs, to encourage deeper respiration and to dislodge and clear secretions from the lungs in the case of an infection. People who have a "phlegmy" cough, or have a persistent cough , should have physio to assist in the removal of stubborn secretions from the lungs, and encourage full use of the lung tissues. Breathing exercises, chest movements and positioning, as well as nebulisation can be helpful. Sinus treatment is used to alleviate blocked sinuses, encouraging drainage, or healing of the inflamed sinus membrane which is producing more phlegm than is normal. Ultrasound, laser, and nebulisation are used, and acupuncture may be recommended.

Back/neck classes
People who have recovered from problems or injuries are taught in a class situation (about 4 per class) how to care for their spines, how to lift, how to sit correctly, and much else. Exercises are also taught which will assist in stabilizing and supporting the spine, thereby protecting it from further injury. These exercises are taught to the patients so that they can be done independently at home. People attend roughly four classes.

Biokinetics
This is a specialized form of exercise therapy, which aims to rehabilitate the body after a specific injury or problem. The biokineticist will assess the patient and identify weaknesses and imbalances, and based on their findings will design exercises to correct and improve these problem areas. We also develop custom-made gym programs which people can do themselves in the gym, honing in on weak areas.

Biomechanical assessment and correction
The body acts like a machine and often problems set in as a result of faulty biomechanics, for example, too much in-rolling of the forefoot in walking or running, compared to their opposing muscles, causes imbalances in the body. Joints can be too stiff, or may have components that lie incorrectly with respect to each other. These problems are identified and corrected using mobilization, stretching, exercise, "inners" in the shoes or whatever is deemed necessary to correct the problem.

Electrotherapy
Certain machines are used for their therapeutic effect to enhance healing or strengthen weakened muscles, or treat pain. To name a few, ultrasound, laser, interferrential, TENS (similar to APS therapy), farradism and others.

Ergonomics
The workplace where you spend a large proportion of your time, needs to be assessed and set up so that it is maximally healthy for your spine. The computer needs to be at eye level, and the chair placed directly in front of it and adjusted to the correct height. You may need to have a custom chair for your specific needs. All the components of an office need to be correctly placed, and our ergonomic advice will guide you, based on a visit to your office, photo's, or on information you give. more »

Iyengar Yoga
Yoga hands down to modern culture the art of healing the physical body through the use of a highly sophisticated array of postures (asanas), movement and breathing techniques. The exercises take each joint in the body through its full range of motion - strengthening, stretching and balancing each part. In Hatha Yoga as taught by internationally renowned teacher, B.K.S. Iyengar, students of all walks of life develop strength and endurance. more »

Laser therapy
Laser therapy utilizes therapeutic laser, and the energy inherent in it to promote healing. The energy is taken up and used by the body for cell division, which is the most necessary component of healing and repair. It is also used to lighten and render unsightly scars less obvious.

Maitland mobilization
Maitland is known as the father of modern physiotherapy, having devised many techniques which move and loosen stiff and painful joints by stimulating joint fluid production and stretch tight joint structures. These techniques are all performed with the therapists hands on the patient and are highly specific and effective.

Meridian Therapy
This is a form of acupuncture in which the energy flow in each of the separate energy channels is assessed and treatment allows this energy to flow in a balanced manner in each channel. Should a blockage, insufficiency or too much energy be found to exist in any channel, then this imbalance is treated using needles, pressure, or one of many other techniques. Harmony of energy flow is essential for health.

Obstetric physiotherapy
Pregnancy causes alterations in posture and adaptations in the spine. Some bodies fail to allow this adaptation to occur, and this causes pain. This adaptation needs to reverse after pregnancy and sometimes this phase of change fails to occur. Also altered posture and weight leads to muscle weakness and imbalance, and this needs addressing if normal physique and posture are to be regained after the pregnancy is over. Specific, custom-made exercises are taught and progressed, based on each pregnant woman's needs, and her spine is mobilized as is necessary. more »

Orthopaedic Manipulative Therapy
This involves hands-on therapy using many different techniques which move the joints, soft tissues, nervous tissues, and even the bones, to promote ideal alignment, balance, and a pain free healthy body. It is known that tightness in the neck can produce problems in the elbows, shoulders, or indeed anywhere down the arm or upper back. This specialized form of physio largely involves accurate diagnosis, and assessment of the cause of the symptom. This is followed by careful decision making as to which technique best corrects this specific problem. It is essential to treat the cause and not merely the symptom.

Pilates
The Pilates Method ( pronounced puh-LAH-teez) of body conditioning is an exercise system focused on flexibility and strength for the total body. The Pilates Method is not just exercise. It is a series of controlled movements engaging the body and mind, performed on specifically designed exercise apparatus and supervised by extensively trained teachers. The Pilates Method was developed in the 1920's by the legendary physical trainer and founder of the Pilates Studio, Joseph H Pilates. more »

Postural management
Most people today have poor posture. This is assessed and the necessary changes made to facilitate correction. Short muscles need stretching, and long, weak ones need strengthening; joints need loosening in order to ensure that they have the necessary available range of movement, to enable posture to be corrected. It is impossible for someone with poor posture to simply "stand up straight."

Pre and postnatal exercise programs
See pregnancy.

Rocobado therapy
This is a new form of assessment and management of the joints of the body. It involves looking at the spine from the top to the bottom and assessing each joint and vertebra and its alignment with respect to its neighbours. Muscles are used in special ways to realign vertebrae and free movement. It is excellent for treating headaches, back problems, pelvis problems as well as jaw dysfunction, e.g. clicking, sticking, teeth grinding and clenching, and stiffness.

Scar release
After a major scar has formed, unless it is released, it can limit movement in other parts of the body, to an astonishing extent. Especially, red or purple, thick and tender scars improve incredibly with a little soft tissue release. A purple, angry looking scar will go white and a thick scar will go much thinner and all tenderness, no matter how severe or old can be eliminated with this treatment.

Stress management
This speaks for itself but the effects of stress on the body are severe, and marked, and can be minimized with massage, exercise, and stretching.

Theraband exercise
This uses wall rack & stabiliser exercise on balls. Exercise therapy is an important part of the rehab process. We strive to, not only, get patients better, but to keep them better for longer. We have a fully equipped gym on the premises but we are also always willing to take you through your paces at any gym in the area.

Traction
This is used to treat some spinal conditions, especially, where "pinched" nerves and discs are involved. It is achieved by means of a sophisticated piece of equipment, which gently stretches one end of the spine away from the rest of the spine. The exact amount of stretch required is calculated using the body weight of the patient. For certain back and neck conditions patients can be treated on the premises.

Traditional physiotherapy
Traditional physiotherapy involves massage, electrotherapy, joint mobilization, and using movement and exercise to promote healing, and well being.
